“You’re on fire today!” Collen cheers as I rip my spear out of an imp.

My hair hangs loosely in my face while sweat drips from my nose. The imps have been running around for hours now, and the portal we are trying to get to keeps spitting them out. My clothes are soaked, and my muscles sore as I fight tooth and nail to improve myself.

Ignoring Collen for now, I focus on my character sheet.

Riley

Attributes

Strength: 15

Dexterity: 14

Constitution: 11

Recovery: 10

Over the last year they have gone up considerably. Every chance I get, I throw myself into the fray and cut down the Ashen. I’ve already cleared a dozen portals, and that number is going to increase by one after today.

My skills on the other hand are steadily coming along. I haven’t unlocked many, but every one of them is useful.

Skills

Lover’s Bond (Unique)

Spear Mastery: Level 2

Bow Mastery: Level 1

Maintenance: Level 1

Tracking: Level 2

Sprinting: Level 1

Dodge: Level 2

They all come in handy when fighting the blue and green portals. To be honest, I’m surprised that I’ve leveled a few of them up already. I was always told that they would be really hard to improve. But I feel like the hardest part was unlocking them.

I’m not sure about the rest of my party, but I’m proud of how far I’ve advanced already. But now, Collen is standing over my shoulder, bringing my attention back to the field.

His hand brushes against my lower back, and I tense as I try not to punch him.

“Get. Off. Me.” I say sternly.

Pulling his hand away, he perks up. “I thought we lost you!”

Wendy steps up to my side, pushing Collen away. “You should know better,” she says scolding our leader.

Bradley grunts once before kicking an imp away from the area. He doesn’t talk much, but he’s a great fighter, and I wouldn’t want anyone else backing me up.

“The portal?” I question.

Collen perks up. “We are almost there, love! We just ha—”

Lifting my spear, I press the tip to his throat. “What have I told you about calling me that?”

Bradley chokes on a laugh while Wendy simply sighs. Collen backs away slowly, still smiling.

“You’ll have to tell me one more time, Riley!”

Closing my eyes, I let out a heavy breath. If it wasn’t for Wendy and Brad keeping me company in this party, I’m sure I would have killed Collen by now. The man is a menace. He doesn’t even hear me when I talk about Ole. He acts like the man is dead and continues to make moves on me.

A small trickle of blood runs down Collen’s neck before I lower my spear. Wendy stays by my side, keeping Collen at arm’s length as the two of us start walking towards the portal.

It’s only a few minutes later that we spot the telltale crimson glow of the portal. A flickering blue outline tells us what difficulty we are going up against, and with a small smile I prepare myself.

It’s been a month since our last dive. The portals are usually swallowed up by Knights of the Blue Order.
